Dust + Glory
"When the Japanese mend broken objects, they aggrandize the damage by filling the cracks with gold. They believe that when something's suffered damage and has a history it becomes more beautiful."
Something that is beautiful can never be fully comprehended - it cannot be captured or kept. Whether it is beautiful in a visual or an emotional sense, the beauty that you saw in it at that specific time cannot be reproduced. It cannot be regulated or defined. At its essence it makes us feel something; stops us in our tracks. It is often immediate - in externally beautiful things, feelings or senses - or it can take years to reveal itself in brokeness and healing.
'Beautiful' is merely a word; trying to capture the bare essence of something that deepens our soul. It fails at best to describe the things that can never be described.
